Got ya covered!

February 20th, 2009

Growing up on the farm we had the awsome blessing of witnessing the birth of all kinds of animals. We raised lots of the usual kinds of animals typically found on the farm to include chickens and geese. We had a nice sized chicken coop out beyond the other sheds and during the long summer days the chickens would be out and about scratching and eating whatever they found wherever they found it.

“He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.” Psalm 91:4

It was especially precious when the chickens would have peeps. It was one of the most beautiful things to see these tiny fluff balls on toothpick legs running around peeping so loud it almost hurt your ears! But when they got cold, or when they got tired, when darkness would fall or when danger would come, they would run to their mother and hide under her wings where they were safe and warm. We saw the same thing as we had canadian geese come every year and nest down along the banks of our pond. Those little ones were so precious and defenseless. They needed their mothers to hide under.

There is a passage in Scripture that gives me that picture every time I read it. But the writer isn’t talking about animals. No, he uses the imagery of the mother hen or goose and her young ones to relate to us how God will care for us when we realize just how much we need him and how helpless we really are and where exactly we need to go when we are tired. Here is what it says:

“He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.” Psalm 91:4

The chicks never stray far from the safety of their mother. So too, we should never stray far from the safety of our loving Heavenly Father. Are you scared? Are you tired? Have you strayed so far that you feel alone and as if you are calling as loudly as you can but no one hears? He hears you. He has wings that were meant for you to nestle under. There is none that can steal you out from under his care and protection. If you need to feel safe; if you need to feel rest; if you need to feel loved, His wings are waiting for you. That is truly where we are the safest. Hide in Him today.
